popular services likes uber. some don't actually own a car. many of those drivers rely on uber.
critics say it is taking advantage of people. they put out there unlimited miles, no credit check. it sounds so simple. reporter: and it was at first, but when this driver signed up with exchange leasing, an arm of uber, he
realized the deal was too good to be true. the driver asked us not to identify him because he is afraid speaking out would risk his job. here is an example of an offer from exchange leasing. you can drive a used 2016
toyota corolla for weekly payments of $161 for three years. totally more than $25,000 plus taxes and fees. the similar car for sale online lists for just $13,000. uber is setting itself as a predatory lending mechanism.
reporter: professor mark williams says in addition to the high rates the company uses the unusual model of taking payments directly out of uber driver's paychecks. they are saying we don't trust to you pay us so we will take the money up front,
minimizing the credit risk. reporter: that caused huge problems for this driver and others when they were told they had violations they never knew about. they said i had tolls and fees areothey kept adding up. reporter: they didn't notify
the drivers or pay the fines until they racked up hundreds of dollars in late fees. they took over $1,500 from my checking account. reporter: the leasing company refused the interview but the company says the person hired to handle the fees were
fired and the drivers were eventually refunded. drivers can opt out of the paycheck deduction, they said. but the terms the company september to us say to qualify for the program you must sign a payment deduction authorization agreement with uber.
i would not recommend the lease to anybody. it is a nightmare. reporter: according to professor williams the arrangement seems to be taking advantage of drivers that have no other choice. clearly you have to have a
car to make money. the car is more expensive than what it is worth.
